When sewage enters a plant for treatment, it streams through a screen that eradicates large floating objects such as sticks and rags that might damage equipment and clog pipes. After the sewage has been screened, it passes into a grit chamber while sand, cinders, and small stones settle to the bottom.
Sewage still contains inorganic and organic matter with other suspended solids after screening is finished and grit is removed. A grit chamber is important in communities with combined sewer systems where gravel or sand may wash into sewers with stormwater. These minute particles solids can be removed from sewage in a sedimentation tank.
Secondary Treatment: Remove Maximum Organic Matter!
The principal secondary treatment technique utilized in secondary treatment is the selected sludge screening system. A trickling filter is a bed of stones from three to six feet deep through which sewage passes.
